Predator Zinfandel is sourced from 50+year old vines that produce rich and intensely flavored fruit. The resulting wine is big and bold with hallmark “old vine” velvety texture, spice and vibrant varietal flavors.

The lady bug is a natural predator that feeds on insects harmful to plants.  “Natural predation” is just one of the many sustainable vineyard practices that eliminates the need for synthetic pesticides.

Goodbye 2013!  We will miss you and all the creative fun we had while you were here. Projects that stick in our mind from 2013 are some of the best we’ve ever had. Like our awesome afterschool trip to Yardage Town, our working with leather, our experiments with papercloth, our teaching expeditions to Bravo Art Studio, our mini-me dolls, and our always amazing costume creation class. We seriously think that every project and every year that passes here at Home Ec Studio are the best. We love sharing our passion for seams and creative things with you and look forward to future ventures into our creative sides in 2014. And if learning to sew is one of your New Year’s resolutions, then you have come to the right place.

Well it’s January again so it’s time for resolutions. Most people making resolutions have one that is fitness related. Whether it’s losing a few pounds, running a half marathon, or just feeling better, fitness is a goal. However, most people don’t get around starting their good resolutions until February. Most of us are still reeling from the holidays and dealing with life’s “first of the year” priorities, so it’s hard to find time to get to the gym. By February things calm down a bit and there are no more reasons to procrastinate. Time to schedule exercise into your life.

If you’re looking for a gym, make sure it is located where it’s convenient for you. The number one factor in getting results is getting to the gym consistently. If your gym is not convenient you’re not going to get there as often. Consistency is absolutely necessary for results. As Woody Allen once said, “80% of success is showing up”. Just get to the gym and something good will happen. Empower yourself, exercise!

We are sew proud and thankful to all our sewing students last month who took part in the October costume classes. They made the month fun and sew successful. Watching their costumes come alive for halloween was such a treat for us as it always is.

As we move into the holiday season, we look forward to cooler days and cozy comforts. Thanks giving pumpkin pies are right around the corner. To celebrate this season, our afterschool class will create a Burdastyle childrens peacoat. The latest at Stone Brewing Company Store South Park is one exquisite collaboration. At Stone, we like to trade beer secrets and recipes with other brewers we know and respect. This time, we came together with the talents of 10 Barrel Brewing Co. and Blue Jacket Brewery. Our joint efforts created  10 Barrel/Blue Jacket/Stone Suede Imperial Porter. It is a rich and robust ale brewed with Jasmine Flowers, Calendula Flowers (both grown at our own Stone Farms) and avocado blossom honey. The botanicals balance out this rich and powerful palate pleaser with a hint of sweetness while the malts provide a nice chocolate-y base. It is a luscious and smooth experience, which is why Suede is such a fitting name. Available for a limited time on tap and in 22 ounce bottles.

It’s that time of year again!  The studio is buzzing with bats and zombies, monsters and Victorian dresses (!).  Who would have thought that we would be looking up the easiest way to sew a hoop wired cage petticoat?  Our young students have evolved in their costume tastes so we will try our best to make their ideas come to life.  This month, we are hosting our 2-hour Halloween costume classes for kids on Wednesdays and Fridays.

And besides our Halloween costume classes, we are also hosting some fun Halloween themed classes for our after school crowd this month. Therese Rossi, our local artist is bringing back her art journal with a Spooky Halloween theme. And Yvonne is bringing back her appliquéd Bats in the Belfry garland for Halloween decor. Ages 7 to 70 are welcome to take this class.

Melanie Martinez from Season 3 of The Voice, stole our hearts the minute we saw that adorable gap toothed smile and big bow perfectly styled with every dress she wore. We were over the moon when we found out Melanie followed Graffiti Beach on instagram! At first we thought…is this another one of those fake accounts? But sure enough, it was Melanie in the flesh (or instagram flesh that is!). 2011 Torrontes CUYUM  MAPU, Mendoza, from our favorite local South Park importer, Our World, Our Community. 

This Torrontes from Argentina will leave you feeling refreshed during this hot weather!

Harvest and Production Notes: Three generations of winemakers!!!  100% Torrontes grapes solely from Quattrocchi’s family vineyard. Harvest occurred in February 2012. It was a manual harvest without leaves. The fermentation with selected yeasts lasted 15-20 days. It has been aged 5-6 months in American Oak barrels. Total production 4,000 cases. Alcohol by volume: 13.5%  Residual sugar: 1.77 g/L  pH: 3.70  Total acidity: 4.50 g/L

Tasting Notes: The color is yellow to gold. Aromas are a mix of grapefruit, apricot and floral. Slight vanilla notes detectable from short time in oak. Palate has ripe fruits of peach, apricot and lychee nut. Gold Award at 2012 San Diego International Wine Competition

Food Pairing: We recommend pairing this Torrontes with our Jerk Chicken or Pork and Peach Flat Bread

Little did Kelly, owner of Salon on 30th, know that when she attended an industry show in Paris last June, she would come back with and Italian idea in mind.  But seeing 1500 stylists from 45 countries sharing a similar passion and curiosity about a line of hair products was enough to pique her own interest and make her do more research about Davines.
