Fashion Camp Starts on the 15th!  We have spots available. We are kicking off our fashion camp with a summer shorts pattern. We anticipate that students will also be able to complete a summer skirts and some extra accessorizing goodies in this class. We provide all materials for our camps, as well as small snacks and beverages. Our camps start at ages 8 and up and there is no sewing experience necessary. We teach them everything from how to thread a needle to the anatomy of the machines, and beyond. We teach them the skills they need to feel comfortable and confident as they are using their new craft to create their own garments.  Sign up for our summer camps here.

This is the beginning of a great summer.  We hope to see you in the studio sewing soon!

THE ROSE – Small Business of the Year!

susanprise

Assembly Majority Leader Tony Atkins honored The Rose Wine Pub owner Susan Prise during Small Business Appreciation ceremonies in Sacramento.

(Sacramento) The Rose Wine Pub, a small neighborhood establishment in the South Park neighborhood of San Diego, was honored by Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins as the Small Business of the Year for the 78th Assembly District.  The recognition was celebrated at a special luncheon and ceremony in Sacramento, attended by the pub’s owner, Susan Prise, and the Majority Leader.

“Rose Wine Pub is place to gather and relax with neighbors and friends in a pleasant, warm atmosphere of good food and drink,” says Atkins. “This local establishment captures the essence of the surrounding area and exemplifies why San Diego is known as a cosmopolitan city of neighborhoods.”

The Rose Wine Pub is named for the historic location it occupies, the restored 1927 Rose Grocery building, and in honor of the owner’s grandmother, Rose Miranda. The wine storage was constructed by a local craftsman and made from the reclaimed redwood of a historic South Park home.

Designed to encompass aspects of all four seasons, The Rose envelops customers in a mixture of materials such as reclaimed wood, stone, and metal. The wine selection features many small productions vineyards all over the world, offering customers the opportunity to taste options they may not find elsewhere.

PROGRESS introduces DISRUPTUS

PROGRESS is proud to carry DISRUPTUS,  Creative Child Magazine’s 2013 GAME OF THE YEAR!

d rup

DISRUPTUS challenges players to think of new ways to use familiar objects or devices. During the game you’ll roll the die, choose the appropriate card or cards, then take one of four actions: Create2, Improve, Transform or Disrupt. With “Transform”, for example, players reveal the top card of the deck, then take one minute to think of ways to “transform” and repurpose that object. If the card depicts, say, a high-heeled shoe, you might imagine nailing that shoe to a door so that people can use the heel of the shoe as a door knocker. If the judge likes your answer the best, you win the round.

For “Create2“, players look at two cards, then take elements from each card to create something new, such as combining the two wheels of a motorcycle with a rope to create a double-decker tire swing.

A great game for kids, adults, families, or as a tool for disruptive thinking in business or product development!

THE ROSE WINE PUB’s in full bloom

Plenty of good reasons to visit this charming South Park bar

San Diego City Beat article and photo by Jen Van Tieghem

bottleforweb.widea

As if I needed another reason to want to break my lease and move to South Park, The Rose Wine Pub (2219 30th St.) has given me seven—as in, I’d probably spend every day of the week there if I lived nearby. It’s easy to spot the building that houses it, with its blush (dare I say rose-colored?) façade bearing the name “Rose Grocery Building.” Inside, Rose offers a diverse wine collection and an adorable ambiance that invites you to settle right in.

The charming interior is dominated by reclaimed wood throughout but balanced by soft, antique-style furniture and a large, white bar top. Accents of branches and bird decorations tie together a theme celebrating nature without cluttering the space.

A group of friends and I decided to stake our claim at the bar to take advantage of our after-work festivities sooner rather than later. The menu we dove into boasted small-production wines from many of the world’s most well-known wine regions. In addition to these, the friendly bar staff offered us some happy-hour selections. A couple of white wines and several reds were only $5 a glass, and the pour size looked like a healthy serving for that price. Even the regular glass prices were reasonable at $8 to $15 for unique wines from near and far.

I started with a happy-hour Zardetto Prosecco—the crisp style of the sparking wine made it a great pre-meal teaser for the taste buds with just a faint sweetness. A friend kindly offered a sip of her Tempranillo, the 2011 “Tintico” from Castillo de Monjardin, which she categorized as “green” in flavor. Its herbaceous and earthy notes also made it a great intro to the menu.

The Malbec I enjoyed next was an interesting fruit-forward version that had a nice acidity to it. The berry and plum flavors matched well with the tang of the artichoke flatbread that I was tearing into (also discounted during happy hour). The bartender noted that the brand of wine I was drinking, Masi, is known for its Italian varietals and is one the bar regularly keeps on hand. The Malbec, he went on to explain, was unique in being an Argentinian wine from the same producer. I agreed that the resulting style was somewhat more like an Italian wine, in an appealing way, with robust flavors and a smooth finish.

Between chatter with the laid-back bartenders, about everything from tattoo shops in the neighborhood to the great wines we were having, I could easily see this becoming a regular spot for and my fellow wine vixens and me—the type of place you feel comfortable no matter your wine IQ. And with a regularly changing wine list and eclectic food menu, they gave even more reasons for return visits.

Like the layers and nuances of one of its delectable wines or the diverse characteristics of its neighborhood, The Rose Wine Pub offers a triple threat of ambiance, knowledgeable staff and a stellar wine list.

Lone Madrone Wines at THE ROSE

Screen Shot 2013-04-22 at 11.33.49 AM

The Rose is proudly featuring the brother and sister winemaking duo, Neil Collins and Jackie Meisinger, and their Lone Madrone label!

Founded in 1996 with the premier goal of producing distinctive wines exclusively from vineyards in the rugged limestone hills of west side Paso Robles, Lone Madrone vineyards are dry farmed and head trained, which winemaker Neil Collins believes to be “the purest expression of the unparalleled terroir of west Paso Robles.”

Lone Madrone wines are unique not only because of where the grapes are grown, but due to the influence of Neil’s winemaking style. The winery produces some rare single varietal wines, however the majority of Lone Madrone wines are extraordinary blends where you distinguish Neil’s unique winemaking slant formed over years of tasting and blending west side Paso Robles wines. The wines of Lone Madrone are all unique and yet characteristically balanced with structure and finesse.

The Rose is featuring the Chenin Blanc, which presents a nose full of apple and pear, & is equisitely balanced with hints of citrus and vanilla on the tongue. Perfect acidity and an unexpectedly long finish make this wine a pleasure to drink.

Come on over to The Rose and try a glass of this bio-dynamically farmed Chenin Blanc – it is perfect!

GRAFFITI BEACH’s Yarn Bombs Hit South Park!

DSC_1353DSC_1367

Photos by Corinne Bollendorf

Yarn as street art? For some reason when I think about knitting and transformative street art, an image of a grandma sitting in a rocking chair sipping tea comes to mind. How can a craft or hobby normally reserved for elderly and do-it-yourselfers, explode into a huge platform for street art?

Graffiti Beach recently teamed up with Marcy Craft of Crochet Grenade, who aims to change the world one yarn-bombing project at a time, to create an installation in front of our store on 2220 Fern St., San Diego.  This three day installation final wrapped up yesterday evening (Sunday, march 3rd) and has been turning heads ever since. We chose to bring yarn-bombing to our store front and our lovely South Park neighborhood, as a part of an effort to raise money to print our Unconventional Street Art Issue of Graffiti Beach Magazine. Our magazine is based on highlighting emerging creative’s around the globe in order to give them a voice and a place to showcase their talents. The mission of our magazine is to create an advertisement free publication that puts the power of design and creativity back into the artist’s hands. This is more than just a magazine, it is a carefully crafted soft book filled with rich imagery and content that acts as an avenue of inspiration as well as creative freedom.

To raise money to fund this endeavor we just launched our PRINT is Not DEAD! Kickstarter Campaign where our goal is to raise $18,500 by March 31st! To do this we are going to need our communities help! Please visit our Kickstarter campaign and learn more about what we are trying to achieve. By pledging $25 to our campaign, you not only show support for local artists but you will also receive a 152 page, beautiful print copy of this issue. Please click here to visit our campaign.
